I'm interning a Graphic Design teacher, and me being primarily a fine arts guy, I need to get in some practice to make sure I'm ahead of the kids for when they ask me questions. I added color overlays over my original sketch and used the burn and dodge tools to build dimension and contrast.

Here is a portrait study of classmates and friends in graphite. I used big and small, and some close-ups of specific parts (hence the big ear in the middle. There are fourteen faces here (many are cropped, and not including the 2 large ears and the nose) Can you find them all? (probably not considering the quality of the photo)

This may seem like stretch, but when i thought of angels + devils, it led to the thought of juxtaposition and contrast. red and green are at opposite ends of the spectrum, as angels and devils are. also, the cool vs. warm effect plays in as well. i could go on but i think you get the idea.

On December 5th, 1945, five Navy Avengers left a Florida Base on a routine training flight. Shortly following departure, the guidance and navigation systems aboard the planes malfunctioned. Over the open sea and with no bearings, the crew made a turn westward in hopes of intersecting the Florida mainland. Time and luck were against them. Flight 19 is one of the greatest and most tragic disappearances of the Bermuda Triangle.

this monday, today, was the final monday of my oil painting classes. I've really enjoyed the work I have done there and the loose, spontaneous, and fast style is really enjoyable and has proven to be effective for me. We have worked with cool subjects, and the time constraints keep me from over-working my pieces. I am pretty happy with this one, a two-hour study of a still life. Unfortunently the picture doesn't do it justice.

I spotted this killdeer on my trip to the campground this weekend. She spotted me but was a compliant model, mainly because she was guarding her two spotted eggs and her other two hatchlings. This sketch is special to me because anything in nature can usually fascinate me, and to just witness the behavioral habits without endangering the creatures makes me feel good, like being in tune with the world around you, coexisting with the creatures we share the world with. Im starting to have a "thing" for birds.

this is my second oil painting, and my first portrait in oil, i was super excited about this one. I used a very loose style with very visible, deliberate brush strokes, however the photo quality is poor (i used a camera phone). I completed it in an hour and a half. The man sitting for me had very interesting qualities, and i think i reflected them well. Although his name was Fred, the peice is titled "Walter", some may figure out why. I was very estatic about this painting, so estatic that i decided to share it with everyone who looks at my blog.

this is one of the latest peices i've done, and it happened to fit wih the theme. This actually started as a print, the eighth print from a monotype series in which i used the intaguo technique to transfer ink to the paper from a pane of glass via drawing the image i wanted on the back of the paper so the ink would stick to where i drew. i then enhanced this with colored pencil.

this seemed like an interesting idea to me, and i was able to incorporate a lot of new techniques i learned, such as graphite wash. the background and the cast shadow from the fence is done with graphite wash. the fence was the only thing i drew with a pencil.

I drew a man who has lost his hair for this weeks I-Fri theme. I had a difficult time trying to come up with an idea and i settled for this. im not very good at drawing people, but i think i got my point across with this one. hopefully next week will have a topic than i can feel more comfortable with. but for this week, i had ideas that i just couldnt achieve and this was an idea that i was still unsure about but i was able to make it work. this definently isnt my favorite work but im glad that i pulled through and was able to have something for this weeks theme.

i like to give myself plenty of time to find a good idea and to let my mind wander. friday i had learned the theme, and i had a few considerations. i went to work friday evening (i work at an ice cream store) and to my fortune, someone asked me for a root beer float. they must of thought something was wrong with me because my eyes lit up up like a childs on christmas morning. they must have wondered why i was so happy to make them a RB float. i was very excited about my idea and as soon as i got home i drew this. however, to my suprise,there was a handful of other people who had similar ideas! either way, im happy with my sketch, even if its not fantastic. i had a lot of fun with this weeks theme.
